Gabriel Lubell (b. 1983) is a composer of musical esoterica, a term which here implies music for a diverse array of chamber ensembles. Drawing on his background as an astronomer, all the music on this album focuses on the relationship between light and sound. Scored for large ensemble of 18 musicians, 'Jim, Jimi, and James' draws on the musical ideas of Jim Morisson, Jimi Hendrix, and James Jamerson. Rather than directly quote any of their music, it presents the fruits of a deep study of their work through the lens of original idea about how these three important musicians influenced all aspects of contemporary sonic exploration. 'He guards the vision of the sunset sky,' for alto saxophone and string quintet, presents a synesthetic impression of a particularly stunning sunset. The string quartet 'A Study of Luminous Object' is a large-scale, systematic exploration of the things that give us light. Fire, fireworks, stars, and bio-luminescence each take their turn in this prismatic essay. The album includes a full-color insert with detailed notes on each piece and was pressed on coke bottle clear vinyl.
